Liao Yimei's RHINOCEROS IN LOVE

Translated by Mark Talako. Directed by Natalie Hennedige (CAKE Theatre, SIN)
Description

Love has been likened to many things in its day – a flame, a flower, an arrow to the heart – but not often to a rhinoceros. RHINOCEROS IN LOVE, widely regarded as China's most popular play ever is a modern classic of contemporary Chinese theatre, weaving tragedy with humour.

It tells the tale of rhinoceros keeper Ma Lu, desperately obsessed with his beautiful neighbour, the unobtainable Mingming. This 'love-sickness' between the couple, is set against a backdrop of a society that suffers for the material while desperately seeking to fulfil (soap opera) dreams in life and love.

In the midst of all this is, a couple spiralling, their spirits waning against the forces that pull them apart all while society is standing on the brink of a new century, revelling in their advances and achievements, and looking to the promise of new wealth and possession to still their uneasy hearts and complete their picture of perfection.

An edgy and energetic production, dusted with dark romance, RHINOCEROS IN LOVE exposes the extremes people will go to for love.
